Prophets and Prophecy

1. Define the term prophet and what is their role in God’s church.
2. List the four major and 12 minor prophets in the Old Testament.
3. Differentiate between major and minor prophets.
4. Name two New Testament prophets and their role.
5. Name three female prophets in the Old Testament and their role.
6. Define the term prophecy and its role in God’s church.
7. Read Revelation 14:12 and 19:10 and discuss how prophecy points to the testimony of Jesus and salvation.
8. Read Deuteronomy 18:22, 1 John 4:1-3, and Jeremiah 23:28-32. Discuss the tests of a true prophet.
9. Find examples in the Bible where the Spirit of the Lord brought prophecy to non-prophets.
10. Study the following biblical accounts and determine if the character qualifies as a prophet. Create a media experience explaining why you came to your conclusion.

  1. Joseph, Genesis 40 & 41
  2. Jonah, the book of Jonah
  3. Balaam, Numbers 22
  4. Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in Daniel chapter 4
  5. John, Revelation 21:1-8

11. Discuss in a group the dual prophecy made by Jesus in Matthew 24 which covers both the fall of Jerusalem and the end of time. Create a chart showing how each phrase can apply to each time frame.
12. List three symbols used in biblical prophecy and give their interpretation.
13. Discuss in a group, the dream of Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel’s interpretation in Daniel chapter 2. Make a model or draw a picture of the image in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Label what each section represents. Then display your project for a few weeks in order to share with your church what you have learned.
14. Do the following activities:

  1. Give a short talk or skit for vespers or prayer meeting (or any appropriate gathering) about one of your favorite prophets.
  2. Complete a Bible study on prophecy with a leader in your church.

6. Read Revelation 2 concerning the discussion of the seven churches and the messenger that was sent to each church. Discuss if that messenger was indeed a prophet.
7. Explain how the day-to-year interpretation of biblical time prophecy influenced William Miller and others in their understanding of 1844.
8. Research three Old Testament prophecies, each describing the birth, life, or death of Jesus Christ.
9. Choose one of the minor prophets and examine:

  1. The time frame they lived
  2. To whom they prophesied
  3. The core message of the prophecy
  4. The power or principality God used to fulfill the immediate prophecy
  5. The message that is relevant for today

10. Read Daniel 7 and diagram which portion of the prophecy has come to pass, as well as the portion of the prophecy that is ahead of us.
11. Study the prophecy of Daniel 7. Compare and contrast the Seventh-day Adventist interpretation of this prophecy to other Protestant churches.
12. Explain the importance of the message of John the Revelator to the last day church. Study Revelation 1-4 and 18-22 to become acquainted with John’s message.
13. Read Joel 2:28-29. Consider and discuss the fact that if we are living in the end time, God may send more prophets.
14. For every good thing God sends to us, the Devil sends a counterfeit. How do you distinguish a true prophet from a false prophet?
15. Nostradamus and Rasputin are considered to have many predictions come true. Examine and identify their lives and their prophecies and why we consider them false prophets.
16. Create a graphical representation of the timeline of the 1260 day and the 2300 day prophecies.
