Ostriches and Canaries

During the late 1960s and 1970s, enormous pressures of social, cultural, and theological change confronted church leaders. Many of these new ideas seemed like “worldliness,” posing a threat to the trusted ways of the past. This book looks at the arrival of this new “progressive” Adventism, the struggle to resist it and prevent its establishment, and the cost of that struggle. Adventist church scholars have often felt like canaries in the coal mine, and Adventist history has had its share of ostriches avoiding unwelcome truths. This is a story of sincere people engaged in a serious struggle for truth and the soul of a church.
